Usually, people want riding lawn mower because they cannot maintain a large lawn with a regular lawn mower. Someone who has a small yard need not purchase one; the same thing goes for people who have gardens, and not lawns. The recommended space in which a ride on lawn mower is practically needed is half an acre, but ride on lawn mowers (also called riding on lawn mowers, lawn tractors or riding mowers) will perform well in medium to large areas, including big lawns, paddocks, yards, orchards, parks and courts.

Before buying one, there are important matters to consider. First of all, one must do thorough research and understand what the lawn tractor does, and in general, how it works. One must know what kind of ride on lawn mower he or she wants, starting with the deck. The deck size indicates the size of the lawnmower blade, and the larger the deck, the wider the scope of the blade will be. It is a given that the bigger the deck size, the bigger the lawn mower itself as well, and the faster the job will be done. If there are a lot of obstacles in the yard, such as trees, then it is best to go with a smaller lawn mower.

Secondly, one must have a place to store the ride on mower when it is not in use. It cannot simply be left out in the open, or else it could get damaged. The best thing to do is to have a tool shed or a garage big enough to fit it inside, so taking measurements is recommended.

The placement of the engine is also important. A lawn tractor with its engine in the rear is convenient because it offers more visibility in the front. Lawn mowers with front engines, however, are generally more powerful.

Speed is also an important factor, and one must get a lawn mower that is neither too fast nor too slow for him or her. One can also choose if they want to the controls to be in the form of gears, or just pedals. Either way, it is quite easy to operate a lawn mower.

Some people choose to let the cut grass get scattered on the lawn after using the tractor. However, others like to bag their leaves, or mulch them. The buyer must be sure of what he or she wants his or her lawn mower to do. Usually, ride on mowers have alternate modes which allow the user to do any of those choices.

Lastly, there are a few other miscellaneous factors that must ensure the comfort of the buyer. These are some of the questions that should be asked: How easy is it to steer? How easy is it to turn? Can the cutting height be adjusted? How much legroom does the machine have? How comfortable is the seat? How easy are the controls to reach and operate? By putting much thought into buying a ride on mower, one will be happy with his or her purchase instead of regretting it.
